On the Bike Skills or OTBS training sessions are intended to give coaches instruction in modeling and teaching riding skills, allowing the coaches to lead by example. During OTBS training, participants are instructed on two primary coach functions:

  1. How to teach student athletes bike handling skills development and refinement
  2. How to become proficient (enough) to teach student athletes skills development and refinement

The classes are designed so each coach has an opportunity to practice skills in the company of their peers and to learn best practices in mountain bike skills instruction.

OTBS 101 teaches a coach the “basics”,  so they can provide fundamental skills instruction, manage a practice, and lead team rides. OTBS 201 builds on skills learned in OTBS 101 and then provides additional resources for a coach to manage advanced practice activities for teams.
Skills covered in OTBS 101 include:

  • neutral position
  • ready position
  • braking
  • basic bike/body separation
  • shifting
  • climbing
  • intro to cornering
Skills covered in OTBS 201 include:

  • building on the OTBS 101 fundamentals
  • climbing and descending dismounts
  • ratcheting
  • track stands
  • small circles
  • switchbacks
  • rock dodge
  • basic front and rear wheel lifts
