WHAT IS DIRT SCHOOL? Mountain Biking for 6th – 12th Graders

Dirt School 2019 is a Minnesota High School Cycling League program for mountain biking to teach student-athletes necessary skills to be a capable and well-informed mountain bike rider, The league partners with school districts or communities to provide this outreach program. This program is geared for students who
- have never been on a mountain bike
- are new to mountain biking or
- want biking instruction to build their skills
The goal of this program is to empower youth through the sport of cycling to be proficient cyclists, whether they are interested in cycling as a life-long sport or racing in the high school league.
Over the course of several weeks, Dirt School students are given an introduction to mountain biking, using a training curriculum.. They hone their bike riding skills with instruction from the licensed MN High School Cycling coaches that accompany them, riding several bike trails around the area. Students receive a free reusable water bottle. Water will be available.
This program is held in the summer months as a day camp or can be offered as an after-school program. Any interested school districts should contact Josh Kleve to explore establishing one in your area at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Bonnie Larson is the MNHSCL Lead for this program. Bonnie has been a coach with the Roseville Area Composite team and has an IMBA and PMBIA Instructor certifications. She is the Liv Ambassador for County Cycles in Roseville, MN leading rides and instructing women on how to have fun on the trails!

All participants will have the option, at no cost, to use Giant or Liv mountain bikes and helmets.. A rider can bring their own bike to use. Any bike brought by a rider will be given a safety inspection.
Transportation to and from the bike trails is provided from a community location.

Dirt School was piloted in 2018, in partnership with Minnetonka Community Education.
With the objective of getting #morekidsonbikes - the Dirt School program was expanded in 2019 to support additional communities and multiple skill levels. The community partners with the League to design the specifics of their program. This program offers hundreds of kids the opportunity to learn about mountain biking.
What was previously Minnesota League 'Summer Camp' has been rolled into the Dirt School Program, offering a day camp experience to 100's of kids across a wider area. There is no overnight component to the Dirt School program. Note: Summer Camp served one group of 60 kids in a single location annually.
